Curriculum

The online bachelor’s in exercise science is a 128-credit program, consisting of general education courses (47 credits), core courses for the exercise science major (57 credits), and concentration courses (21 credits). The program covers topics such as movement, nutrition, counseling and coaching techniques, behavioral strategies, and the fundamentals of business. You will put your knowledge and skills to use through practical and experiential opportunities, as well as formulate and implement your own exercise science-related project.

As you engage in a range of relevant courses, from stress management to exercise physiology, you’ll benefit from:

  • Real-world practice: Gain career experience through a capstone project and a 400-hour practicum in a location of your choice.
  • Industry-relevant concentrations: Choose between two concentrations, namely Wellness Management, and Strength and Conditioning.
  • Cutting-edge learning: Study human movement, fitness, and training remotely through the state-of-the-art Human Performance Lab.

Admissions

The process for admission and enrollment is straightforward and hassle-free, with guidance from a dedicated admissions advisor. No application fees or entrance exams are required and you can choose to start in the fall, spring, or summer. Maryville University is transfer-credit friendly and will even request transcripts on your behalf. Applicants who don’t meet the GPA requirements may be considered for provisional admission for certain programs.

To complete an application, you will need to submit:

  • A completed online application

  • Your high school diploma or GED

  • Official high school transcripts, with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale

The online BS in exercise science will prepare you to pursue various professional roles in the field, such as personal trainer, health educator, or recreation coordinator. You’ll also be qualified to design customized exercise programs as an exercise physiologist. Or, you could pursue a career as a wellness director and manage wellness programs within an organization. The program is also designed to equip you with the exercise science skills and competencies you need to pursue further certifications that can help enhance your career prospects. 

Depending on your personal interests and career goals, you can tailor your education by choosing between the following two concentrations:

Wellness Management — Coursework focuses on applying the fundamentals of exercise science to health management, with a focus on evidence-based practice in nutrition, health program planning, and health-behavior change management.

Strength and Conditioning — Coursework focuses on performance coaching, tactical strength and conditioning, and program planning. This is the foundation for working with athletes, members of the military, first responders, and others aiming for peak fitness and performance.
